My ISP / WSP Desiderata
- unix-compatible server or Mac, not NT
- web/ftp files accessible via a unix shell login
- JavaServer Pages & Java Applets perhaps best using Sun's Java Web Server
- Java 2
- MySQL or equivalent
- Web site search engine, e.g. Excite for Web Servers (EWS)
- QuickTime Streaming server probably best on Mac OS X Server, preferably with Akmai FreeFlowISP
- Good web log analysis. See
http://summary.net:7000/~demo/report/60
http://summary.net:7000/~demo/menu
http://summary.net/summary.html
- Listserv, majordomo, or equivalent
- Akamai FreeFlow ISP so I can get good QuickTime streaming throughput (this costs the ISP nothing, an interesting deal).
- Apple WebObjects preferably with templates for store and database apps so one can get up to speed quickly without going back to school
- Willingness to create a handful of unix group accounts to aid in managing multiple sites from one login account
- Incoming spam identification and filtering, so I rarely see any. For example, Brightmail's product.
- Web browser email access via SSL, e.g. MailSpinner, Emu 3, Emu Alacer , etc.
- Web interface for account maintenance remotely by subscriber, including email accounts and aliases, domain and subdomain names, etc. Ideally the interface works in real time, but it's ok if some operations require approval by the provider.
- Access to files via AppleShare IP protocol
These capabilities can be spread out on multiple servers on multiple platforms.
